Welcome to the DPL...

Welcome to the Damsel Preservation League or "DPL" for short. Contained herein, you'll find a multitude of damsels of all ages worthy of preservation, as well as many links to current artists & writers of the DID genre, and many old-school favourites. Although this is basically a research type blog, there may be some occasional "mature" themed comics so, beware of this. Also this blog & is moderated to keep the spam to a minimum. The majority of the images are ones I've personally "rebuilt" from either my own collection or scans found elsewhere on the 'net. Any applicable copyrights belong to the owners and I make no money from them. Also note that this blog is still a work in progress and will be added to as I continue along...

Betty And Cheryl Get Muddy

The battle rages on!

I've saved the best for last. Here (in all it's Dan DeCarlo art gloriousness) is the epic(?) mud-fight between Betty Cooper, Cheryl and Jason Blossom and Archie Andrews. Instigated by one Reginald Mantle (of course) and highly accepted by one Veronica Lodge (the evil co-conspirator). Scanned in from my personal copy of Betty & Veronica Spectacular~Archie Giant Series #530 (Giant Series Magazine under Archie Comic Publications~September, 1983). Please note Veronica's over-whelming enthusiasm. A total 180 degree turn-around from her opposition to mud-wrestling as observed in Veronica Gets Muddy Pt.1. Bonus detail panels of the fight and GGA art! Also, watch for a classic DeCarlo sight-gag on page 2 (hint: Reggie kicks aside a little girl's sand castle, making her the "3rd damsel"...) Bonus cover scan, as well...

Mega-bonus details!

GGA!!!

Go get 'er, Cheryl!

Classic DeCarlo art!

Betty gets the upper hand!

Bottoms up for Cheryl!

Veronica Lodge Get's Muddy Pt.2

The above detail panel and two pages (and more detail panels) that follow, are from Archie's Vacation Special #1(Summer Edition, 1994~Archie Comic Publications, Inc.) In the story, each member of the gang has chosen a place to visit while on summer vacation. Veronica's choice being a luxury spa. But, while she and Betty are relaxing in a nice, warm mud-bath, Jughead decides to join them, sandwich in hand (Jug's decision is mainly due to the fact that his food had gotten too soggy to eat in the sauna...) Insults and mud fly as Ronnie and Jug battle it out. Betty had the foresight to lam while she could. My only lament here, is that the late, great, Dan DeCarlo wasn't the artist. Alas!

AAAAHH! Relaxing!

Smart move, Betty!

Let the mud-slinging begin!

Veronica Lodge Gets Muddy Pt.1

It's too bad (for you "sticky" fans out there) that there is no follow-up to this tale from Betty & Veronica #305(1st series, CLOSE-UP, INC.~May, 1981). Read on as Veronica rants on about the "evils" of mud wrestling. Keep this tale in mind as there is another side to Veronica's abhorrence to, "All Things Muddy", that I will be posting later in the week, heh, heh...

Betty And Veronica's Sticky Sitch

I've included this tale mainly due to the recent weather we've been having here in Knoxville, TN. Super...sticky...humid...hot...weather. So, I can side with Veronica Lodge in this one. Too bad she didn't think to invite ol' Arch into her air-conditioned house. Oh, well. Scanned in from my "not-so-rare" copy of Betty & Veronica Spectacular~Archie Giant Series #530 (Giant Series Magazine under Archie Comic Publications~September, 1983)...

Doris Gets Sticky

Here's a favourite Sabrina tale of mine. From Archie's T.V. Laugh-Out #60 (ARCHIE MUSIC CORP~August, 1978), comes this tale of revenge as only Sabrina Spellman can administer. In a rare display of pure evilness, Sabrina brings out the (almost) worst in herself, as she plagues "Doris the Datenapper" with a multitude of sticky, messy mishaps. Starting with a simple "fall down" gag, Sabrina moves onto the infamous "mud-puddle-splashed-by-car" bit. She ends it all with a nice, hot, super-cheesy pizza to the torso. Unfortunately (or maybe for good measure), Harvey gets caught up in the latter trick. Hey! I'll take mine with extra cheese and mushrooms! Hee, hee...Glorious, over-sized detail panels provided free of charge...

Betty Cooper's Wet Dream

I wasn't sure about this one at first. But it seems to fit into the "sticky" category. And seeing as how it's been pretty humid and sticky in my part of the world the past couple of weeks, I'll let you decide. I can only imagine what some of you will think up after reading this tale from Betty & Veronica #305(1st series, CLOSE-UP, INC.~May, 1981). To say it's highly suggestive...would be an understatement. To say if there is any peril involved...is anybody's guess. What was Betty really dreaming about? I have my own, twisted thoughts but, I'll leave them to myself. Here, the writer is in total controlle of your mind. The art is classic DeCarlo. And I'm betting even Voltaire would blush after perusing this. Have a read...

Connie Martin's Dire Dilemma

Found this short-story nugget (a very breezy four-pager, yet!), in the pages of Calling All Girls #1 (PARENT'S MAGAZINE PRESS, INC.~September, 1941), which involves one Connie Martin (Mayor Martin's daughter), who runs afoul of two bandits. This is an all-text story with some nice illustrations, especially the last one (detail above). Restored the best I could on this. Original scans sourced from the DCM. Kudos to the scanner and poster of this rare book! This was Connie's first appearance and, as yet, there are no other early issues of CAG posted but this tale indicates that the series will continue. If any-one has scans or knows of the other tales, let me know, please! Read on...
